YAFAP!

Holy crap, I did it. After ten years of playing Nethack (off and on), I just completed my first non-explore/wizard mode ascension.

For those out of the loop, this is something to be proud of. It's the computer-geek equivalent of running a marathon.

This ascension feels doubly good because I feel like the game really did not want me to succeed. It seemed like I never caught a break.

Anyway, I can do a full write up if anyone's interested. Not coincidently, I took copious notes while playing.

Man, I'm all shaky. Ok, time to pack and move.

Jesus, man. I can't even comprehend Nethack enough to keep a guy alive beyond a few levels. I get down to the gnomes at best.

Y'know, every time I'd get back into Nethack, I'd feel like I'd plateau pretty early with what I was able to accomplish, and wasn't sure how I was ever going to get farther in the game.

This time, I changed a few things about the way I played (took notes, and planned my way through the special levels, for example) and it made a difference.

Mostly, though, it just seemed like everything "clicked" this time around. I finally got it. Though I'm at a loss to say exactly what "it" is.

And, there are some exellent guides out there that will really help you get a grip on the game. Maniac's Ascension Guide in particular was very helpful on this ascension of mine.
